Are Mystery Box Sites Worth It? Odds, Shipping and Buyback

2026-09-30 · 5 min read · Unboxing

Mystery box sites sell boxes of sneakers, tech, streetwear and collectibles, with a small chance at something expensive. Are they worth it? Here's the maths.

How they work

Each box lists every possible item and its odds. You pay the box price, a random item is drawn, and you choose to ship it or sell it back for site credit.

Expected value

Add up each item's value times its chance and you get the box's expected value (EV). On almost every box the EV is below the price. That gap is the site's edge. Over many boxes you get back less than you put in, just like a casino.

Buyback rates

Most sites buy items back at roughly 80 to 90% of the listed value. If you plan to sell everything back, factor that cut in on top of the house edge.

Shipping

Shipping and import fees are often charged separately and can wipe out the value of mid-range wins. Check delivery costs to your country before you open.

So, worth it?

As a way to get items cheaply, no. On average you'll pay more than buying the item outright. As entertainment with a fixed budget, many people enjoy it. Treat the money as spent the moment you open a box.
